He can also talk with his doctor and the drug manufacturer that makes his prescripitons. A letter from the doctor to the drug manufacturer regarding his financial burden. The drug manufacturers are willing to help people by providing free medicines or medicines at reduced costs.

I would shop around for the best prices as well. What I do is take my prescriptions and make phone calls to all the local pharmacies and get their prices.

Looking for patient assistance is a start but it would be best if he looks for another job that does offer insurance. If all he makes is $1000 a month, even getting a job at Home Depot or Starbucks or another chain store like that would be smart for him. I am also type I so I know the drama he is going through. I had to switch jobs to get coverage and it was worth it! He will not be able to pay for an insurance policy on his own as no one will cover him due to the diabetes.

Once he has coverage he will need to be careful about changing jobs to make sure he does not have a lapse in coverage. Sad but true when you are diabetic. Tell him to hang in there!

Call the diabetic association in your country (ie Canadian Diabetes Assocation), they’ll recommend more ‘diabetic-friendly’ insurance companies. I always get my travel insurance that way, they discriminate a LOT less than usual insurance companies. They’ll also be able to provide decent advice on prescription help.
