If you’ve decided you want to sell insurance..get an entry level job with an insurance company–they will often pay for you to go to classes, pay for the materials, and pay for your test as long as you pass it. I notice there are A LOT of entry level insurance sales positions when I look at hotjobs on yahoo. That’s the cheapest way—it would be free.

I found the web based study programs to be the least expensive and the most beneficial. If I remember it was around $100- $150. Sorry but I do not have the web site off hand. Just google it and I am sure you will find something suitable. If I can be of any more help please let me know.

I’ve been in the industry for 32 years and have trained many. If you are on very limited funds, I suggest you go to Kaplan. You can find them at. This is going to be your best bet. Sometimes you can get books at the library for the CLU designation. Studying these can help, but if you are new to the industry, you need the basics. Kaplan is the best on the market for these. You can also contact your state insurance department and sometimes they have courses at a reduced cost or can tell you where to get used books. Hope this helps.

Selling insurance is not like selling cars, or other products. You are selling knowledge. Reading a few books and taking a test is a terrible way to prepare for this job. Most insurance salesmen fail.

If you want to succeed, you need to prepare yourself. I agree with the previous post that you would be better off getting an entry level job with an insurance company. The knowledge you gain will greatly increase your odds of success as an agent.
